Greece, Crete, Heraklion – Bembo Fountain (00:00:27)

$40.00

The fountain was constructed between 1552 and 1554 and named after the Venetian governor of Candia; Gianmatteo Bembo.
He was the first to provide Candia with spring water via an aqueduct all the way from mount Jouchtas. It’s the oldest fountain in the city and had a dramatic impact on the daily lives of the people of Candia.

The fountain bears Gothic and Renaissance elements and consists of a spout and a small, rectangular basin. It shows the coats of arms of four Venetian Dukes and is decorated with ornate patterns, typical of Greek architecture at the time.
