The first definitive mention of the image is an entry in the Royal Chronicles of Ayutthaya which notes that during the reign of King Songtham (r. 1620-28), the image was moved from a point to the east and a mondop was built over it, strongly suggesting that the image was already famous and well-regarded at that point. In the same year, a “footprint” of the Buddha was discovered at Saraburi and the King hastened to erect a mondop over the site, probably similar in form to the one at Ayutthaya.
